Constructed in 1100 to guard the road from the port at Talamone to Siena, the castle has belonged to the Frescobaldi family since 1989. Already one of the top-quality producers of Brunello di Montalcino in the late 19th century, the tenuta of Castelgiocondo yields massively-structured wines of great complexity and balance.
The estate lies on the southwestern slope of Montalcino, at elevations ranging from 180 to 400 metres, and comprises 815 hectares, with 230 hectares under vine. A total of 152 hectares are officially registered for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The soils, given their various elevations, are diverse, and the climate is warm and dry, relieved by marine breezes: these are ideal conditions for producing very full-bodied, sturdily-structured and powerful wines that are, at the same time, characterized by remarkable finesse and balance. The wines produced at the Castel Giocondo estate are: Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino, Frescobaldi Campo ai Sassi Rosso di Montalcino and Frescobaldi Lamaione.
Frescobaldi Campo ai Sassi Rosso di Montalcino
Frescobaldi Campo ai Sassi Rosso of Montalcino, is matured and refined for a year in oak barriques and a further 15 months in the bottle.
The color is a intense ruby red, the aroma is a fruity mix of raspberries and blackberries, on the palate it is rich and harmonic.
Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
The Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only produced from only the more favorable vintage years and in limited amounts. It is matured and refined for 4 years in partly oak barriques and partly in the bottle. The structure is greatly enhanced, yielding an intense, complex wine with a highly concentrated aroma. Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino is matured and refined for 3 years, partly in oak barriques and partly in the bottle, (at least 6months). The result is a well structured, warm and persistent wine, rich and fine in bouquet.
